Phoenicia is a hamlet in the Town of Shandaken in Ulster County, in the heart of the Catskill Mountain Park. It is the largest town center in the Town of Shandaken. It is right off of 28 bypass, where NY 214 begins. It has a good 3 block strip with inns, restaurants, tubing and rafting outfitters, a campground, gas, groceries, bars and other shopping all in a small area with an old town looks Like the rest of the towns and Route 28 in this area, Phoenicia is on Esopus Creek. Warner Creek runs through the downtown area, under NY 214, to meet with the larger Esopus here too. The creek is great for fishing and tubing, as well as canoeing. But during storms it can be a flood zone as in Hurricane Irene, where large parts of the town were flooded and Route 28, and old Route 28 aka CR 40, as well as the railroad grade were washed out. |
