Now Over 21 Years Old, 2nd Best Blue Route in the USA!
NY Route 28: Catskill Mountain Trail
NYRoute28.com The East-West Site of NYRoutes.com from February, 2003 From the New York State Thruway, I-87 Exit 19 in Kingston to Margaretville |
The Start of the Route 28's Southern End is Kingston. You can easily pick it up off Thruway Exit 19. After the toll barrier, the road will first dump you out on I-587, which is basically a big traffic intersection and bypass for the city part of Route 28, that feeds you to either 28 West or US 9W or Washington Street into the city. Also, I-587 is the shortest interstate highway in America. You can also pick up US 209 South to Ellenville and Liberty.
If you need some groceries or other department store stuff, this is the place to stock up before heading into the hills. Follow Washington Street south towards the city for all the usual chain store outlets we pretend to hate while enjoying their great variety and prices.
It is one of the oldest cities in the USA, settled in 1650's by the Dutch. It used to be named Esopus after the local Indian tribe. Esopus is the name of the river our Route 28 follows. It was temporarily the state capital during the Revolutionary War but the British captured and burned it in 1777. It is now the county seat of Ulster County.
