NY Route 28: Central Adirondack Trail
NYRoute28.com: CentralAdirondackTrail.com The East-West Site of NYRoutes.com from February, 2003 From the Adirondack Northway, I-87 to the New York State Thruway, I-90 |
North River is the little riverside hamlet a couple miles west of North Creek, where the railroad tracks cross over the route. It is also the old name for the Hudson River too. There are a few state maintained pull-offs for river and canoe access here, but the hamlet itself has just one old general store that was not even one the last time I was there. The state put up a big display boards with stories about logging and the early, rough life there. Uphill from NY 28, towards the old Barton Garnet Mine pits, used for industrial abrasives, is Thirteenth and other lakes with good state land access. 13th Lake has a little free tenting area by the lot for quick and dirty tenting. There is a cross privately run country ski center too up in the hills nearby. But for most, North River is just an extension of North Creek and it's all in the Town of Johnsburg, Warren County.
The route itself is good and fast, even with the rr crossings. Be careful in the hamlet ares in season. But just west of North River is the Hamilton County line and the long ascent uphill towards Indian Lake. The hill and a heavy NW wind can make for some slow going.
