NY Route 28: Central Adirondack Trail
NYRoute28.com: CentralAdirondackTrail.com The East-West Site of NYRoutes.com from February, 2003 From the Adirondack Northway, I-87 to the New York State Thruway, I-90 |
After you leave North Creek heading westbound on 28, there is a good bend in the road and a steep upgrade for almost 4 miles as you enter the Town of Indian Lake in Hamilton County and the road pulls away from the Hudson River. There are a few good size hills with 4 uphill passing grades on the way to Indian Lake. The road is fairly straight and has had the brush cleared out on each side of road. It is also a fast section of the road, so beware of speed traps. As of the summer of 2021, it has been completely repaved from North River all the way through the town, so it is nice and smooth. Just before the hamlet, you cross over Lake Abanakee and pass to the south of Adirondack Lake, where there are picnic areas just off the road. Lake Abanakee flows south into Indian Lake, but canoe-ers have to carry around the rapids and dam.
The town operates a small downhill ski area off of NY 30 just south of junction o 28. At the junction of NY Route 30, you pick up NY Route 30 North. If you want to see the actual Indian Lake (14 miles long), you have to turn left on NY 30 South. The hamlet has a grocery, hardware and general store and few bars, delis and a chain convenience store. The route will now be NY Routes 30 & 28 all the way south(west) to Blue Montain Lake. On the western end of the hamlet is the Cedar River Golf Course and access to the Cedar River Flow via CR 12. Indian Lake, through the connecting Lake & River Abanakee, is one of the sources of the Hudson River. So there's a lot of rafting in spring along the Upper Hudson and canoeing all season. In season, hunting is good and challenging in the mountains and around the lakes. Warning to campers, watch out for black bears, don't leave food around or act like they are tame animals! NY Route 28 crosses through east-west and it's the main street of the hamlet. From Indian Lake west, the route will now be NY Routes 30 & 28 all the way north-west to Blue Mountain Lake. Indian Lake is one of the sources for the Hudson. But the hamlet itself is a mile north of the Lake. Sabael is two miles south of the junction, on NY 30, and is on the west side of Indian Lake, There's a lot of rafting and canoeing in season along the Upper Hudson and the chain of lakes. In their season, hunting and fishing are good and challenging in the mountains and around the lakes. Warning, watch out for black bears, don't leave food around or act like they are tame animals, they can maul you!
Indian Lake has poor cell phone coverage. The next town with reasonable cell phone service north is Blue Mountain Lake. But the town library has 24/7 free wireless service at the town library on the corner of 28/30 and Pelon Road. If you follow Pelon Road to the end, following the fork to the left, you will come to an awesome swimming hole on the Cedar River. It is very "iron"ic though.
