NY Route 28: Central Adirondack Trail

North Creek is a classic little Adirondack working village that adapted to tourism and the outdoor life. It is located in the larger Town of Johnsburg at the junction of NY 28N and next to Gore Mountain, on the upper Hudson River. The Town of Johsnburg includes Wevertown, Johnsburg, North River and Gore Mountain. Gore Mountain is the biggest draw there, it is the second largest ski area in the Adirondacks. They are planning expansions of the area, including a possible ski approach into downtown North Creak. There is an almost abandoned spur railroad line of the old Delaware and Hudson Railroad, that used to go up to the Tahawus Mine of National Lead. In the winter, the line is used as a snowmobile trail. Rafting on the Hudson River is big here in the spring season, which is good thanks to heavy spring rains. There is also free camping off of NY 28 by the ski bowl.
Roadwise, the road is very good around here. There is a small 45 mph zone as you pass Main Street on the eastern approach. Then, there's a big down grade as you pass the ski bowl and approach the level of the Hudson River west of town. Once at river level, there is a couple of railway crossings but otherwise the road is very fast and good here.
