Eagle Bay & Big Moose Lake

Eagle Bay is located in Herkimer County just west of the Herkimer-Hamilton County line, 2 minutes from Inlet. It is on the Moose River on the north-east end of Fourth Lake. Like Old Forge & Thendara, it is in the Town of Webb. It was once had a railroad station, now a run down office. on the spur line from Old Forge to Raquette Lake. That spur line, which follows NY 28 most of the way to Old Forge, is now the trunk snowmobile trail. From here, you can take CR 1 north to Big Moose Lake and the Stillwater Reservoir. Big Moose Lake is about 6 miles north of Eagle Bay and features a really pretty lake with a lot of small Adirondack inns and resorts, based on the old great camps.

NOTICE SLEDDERS! The Towns of Webb and Inlet, including Eagle Bay, Moose Lake, Old Forge and Thendara, and all the Chain lakes, require a trail permit for sledding on the two towns' trails. Also, your sled must be registered in New York State for use anywhere in the state. The Adirondack RR and Moose River Road, in Inlet, are free though.

Uncas Road Detour You can take a little scenic detour from Raquette Lake west to Eagle Bay on old Uncas Road, and bypass Inlet. It is dirt most of the way and pretty narrow and hilly, so don't be in a rush. It goes by Upper and Lower ponds, where there's state land access. This rock is in the narrow, mossy pass on top of the hill.
